New Penpals!

It has taken awhile, but we have finally received our penpals all the way from Ulyanovsk, Russia!!! Our pals in Russia are learning to speak English and have agreed to share a few letters with us during the year. Unfortunately, customs would not let their actual letters into Canada, therefore we have pictures of their letters instead.

Today each student received their letter and are now in the process of writing a response. Some students have chosen to type their letters using word, while others are going old school with paper/pencil.

We are working on writing our response using basic English facts such careers and members of our family.

Global Connections at its Finest!

Today we had the greatest pleasure to complete a mystery location hangout with a class on a completely different continent than us. After asking many questions, we narrowed down their location to Israel!!! What a unique and once in a life opportunity. Israel is a 9 hour's ahead of us, however the class we connected with today were part of a private class that is working to strengthen their English.

Here are some interesting facts we learned about our new pals today:
  • They live in Tel Aviv, Israel (which is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL city!!)
  • It borders the Mediterranean Ocean
  • The students are all of the Jewish faith
  • They speak Hebrew (and even taught us how to say Hello in Hebrew - Shalom, which also can mean Peace)
  • Students go to school every day of the week, except on Saturdays.
  • They rarely get snow, and if any, it is an extremely tiny amount. (We showed them the crazy amount of snow we got last night- they were shocked!!!)
  • They play similar sports to us. But they are known for their Judo.

Here is a video they sent us about their amazing country:

My favorite thing about this hangout today was our "questioning" time. We both asked questions about our everyday lives. Even though these students live on the other side of the world than us, we are all still so similar! They have similar likes to us, like music and sports. We learn similar information in school. All in all - we are no different than one another. I truly felt like this was an amazing experience and opportunity for our students. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.

School Wide Project for CRENSHAW!

Greetings Mike Mountain Horse families!

We sincerely hope that you are enjoying our One School, One Book selection: Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate. A great many themes surface in this remarkable read, and, as you may have already noticed, there are also some very sensitive topics addressed. Though sometimes difficult to discuss, hardship and homelessness are realities in today’s world and we encourage you to take these opportunities to engage in conversation with your child (children) about these concepts. What better way to learn than through quality literature?

With awareness of poverty and homelessness growing, we invite our school population to participate in two charity efforts for local individuals and families in need:

  • Donations of personal care items and/or packages for YWCA Harbour House. YWCA Harbour House provides shelter and care for families in crisis.
  • Items to donate or include in a large Ziploc freezer bag: (see display case across from office) *full size shampoo and conditioner *first aid supplies (i.e. band-aids and ointment) *toothbrushes and toothpaste *deodorant/antiperspirant *hand lotion *slippers for women and children
  • ITEMS CAN BE BROUGHT IN TO CLASSROOM TEACHERS ON OR BEFORE WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 15TH .
Also;
  •  Monetary donations in the form of sponsorship as our school participates in the ‘Coldest Night of the Year’ walk taking place on the afternoon of February 15th (held in conjunction with our annual ‘Winter Walk)’.
  • This fundraising effort will benefit Streets Alive Mission which battles poverty in Lethbridge and the surrounding communities by offering free services, clothing and aid to anyone who needs it.
  • MONEY CAN BE BROUGHT IN TO CLASSROOM TEACHERS ON OR BEFORE WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 15TH .

*Donations will be presented to YWCA Harbour House and Streets Alive Mission at the One School, One Book Closing Assembly taking place in our gymnasium on Thursday, February 16th beginning at 2:15pm.

Thank you for your support!

Exciting News!

This week I shared a very personal, family secret with my students. I didn't quite know how to share the news with the students, however a new friend (and parent of one of our students I may add), sent me a link with the coolest way to share the news.

Well here it is:

I created a secret message using math addition facts like we are working on at the moment. Students had to work independently to solve the mystery.

What was the secret?!
Mrs. Fahey is having two babies!!

As I've mentioned in my email, I will keep you all updated on our progress. I hope to work with your amazing children for as long as possible!! Thank you all for your well wishes and congratulations. My husband, Grayson and I are very excited for this new chapter of our lives :)
