Destination Imagination!!

Destination Imagination is an opportunity for students to be creative and innovative using various materials, with a set purpose in mind.

This was our first attempt this year at a Destination Imagination Project, and I must admit- it was a huge success!! The students of 3B are so creative, they simply blow me away.

For the project, students were put into groups of 3. Each group was given a bag of materials (each group had the same materials).

The purpose of their project, was to create a halloween mask of some sort.

Here are our results:

With the same materials, every mask is so completely different. I truly enjoyed watching their planning and thought process, but even more I think I enjoyed watching the cooperation and team work that had to go into this project. Great job 3B!!!

3B Has Gone Batty!!

This past week we finished our Bat artwork, researched various types of micro and mega bats, and completed our "Batty Adventure" writing.

Check out our art work:

Connected Reader Club!

We are starting a new weekly activity with a grade three class in Kansas City. The Grade 3 class from William Southern Elementary and the students of 3B at Mike Mountain Horse Elementary will be reading "Loser" By Jerry Spinelli. Each week we will connect to discuss our favorite part, character, predictions, inferences etc.

Today we had a simple introduction with our Connected Reader Group.

This is the teacher: Mr. DeLoach. He explained to the class that he does not normally wear a hat while teaching, but today is Hat Day at their school. We will be connecting through google hangouts, as well as our kidblog for various reader response activities.

I will post our activities on the Global Connections link as we read through the book Loser.

MMH does Mission Impossible!!

We are extremely lucky to have one crazy, creative mind on staff: Mr. Weavers! With Mr. Weaver's crazy ideas, and Mrs. Barker's assistance, Mission Impossible has come to life in our gym!

Students must be buddied. One runs the course, while the other "supervises". The job of the supervising buddy is the return equipment that may be toppled, and to ensure their buddy is following the MANY rules.

Here is the rules to Mission Impossible:

  • going from obstacle to obstacle, students MUST touch a line on the floor somehow.
  • they CANNOT touch anything metal
  • there is a certain color which they are not allowed to touch
  • the hardest rule I thought to follow was NO TALKING!!! But, the students are doing amazing with this rule.
  • they cannot make any noise what so ever. There are many bells hanging on obstacles, you cannot touch them!
  • If you touch obstacles, or knock down balls, sticks, pylons etc, you have to start back from the beginning.
  • The goal is to get through the entire course and capture the jewel at the center!
We've only had one gym class so far to try out the course, but with the limited time already, I've noticed so many amazing things with this activity. Watching students study the obstacles, and make a plan of attack in their heads is truly amazing. Also their resiliency, and refusal to give up is simply incredible. You'd think being sent back to the beginning MANY times would get frustrating, but instead the students are taking it on as a challenge and trying to surpass their own expectations. I am so glad we have two more weeks of this activity.
