Project Based Learning

January/February/March

Our major Project Based Learning (PBL) assignment involves creating and building their very own board game. We spent the month of January playing various board games and looking at all the components that make up a successful game. Students were then given the same template and were asked to make a game. During this activity, students discovered that even with the same board, the game possibilities were endless. This activity really focused on using peer feedback in order to improve and revise a game in order to make it successful.

Finally we are starting our own game boards! So far we are just in the planning stages, but stay tuned to see what we can create!

This year the grade 3 team decided to take a different approach to our Social Studies curriculum and implement a PBL project. We have taken The Amazing Race, and put a twist on it to fit our social studies program.

Each classroom represents a different country:
Fahey ~ Peru
Barker ~ Ukraine
Burke ~ Tunisia
Payne ~ India

Students had the opportunity to choose their own partner from any of the grade 3 classes. Twice a week they will travel through numerous centers for each country.

Students will encounter: ROAD BLOCKS - which are activities that they MUST complete, as well as DETOURS - activities where students have a choice.

We started our project today, March 23, where it will run till the middle of May.

Here are some photos of our first day:

  1. I would love to learn more about what some activities for roadblocks and detours were. This sounds amazing!
