February 2017

For the last three weeks, students have completed 2 projects. One involved making a water bottle holder for their desk (see the main blog for photos), and the second project was creating a playground or amusement park. I loved watching how creative and innovative students can be, but more so how they explain their thought process. Enjoy :)

January 19, 2017

Continuing with our building unit, today we created "mini pieces of furniture". Students were expected to build a small version of furniture that is stable and could stand without assistance.

January 12, 2017

Today we attempted our first project for our Building Unit. Students had to create animals that could free stand without assistance. The only materials they were allowed to use were: Toothpicks and clay. After sculpting our animals, students gathered on the carpet and discussed what they made, how they made it and any modifications they had to make in order to achieve the final goal: making the animal stand without assistance.

Impressive!!

This past week, students of 3B have been working on a science unit entitled: "Testing With a Variety of Materials". Students have learned about various materials that are useful for building. As well, they have learned about beams, pillars, containers and truss supports. To assess their learning, Ms. Neigum (our PSI student teacher), encouraged students to make a stable structure that used a truss, triangular shape support. Here is our final products!

November 1-4

This week we completed our concluding our Hearing and Sound unit. Students had to create a musical instrument of their choice. Students were asked to bring materials to make an instrument. Here were some of the materials used:

And here are our final products:

Most of the instruments made have dual purpose.

The creativity from these students is astounding! I love any form of building projects with these guys as they always blow my expectations out of the water.

Enjoy the *beautiful* sound of our classroom orchestra!

**********************************************

To start the year, we focused on the Scientific Process. This process includes:
1. What is the problem?
2. Creating a hypothesis
3. What key materials will be need
4. Completing the experiment / procedure
5. Recording our observations
6. Creating a conclusion to our experiment

In order to practice the scientific process, we completed two interesting experiments:

The first was: What type of bubble gum can blow the biggest bubble?
~ students worked with 4 different types of gum. They had to chew and blow as big of bubbles as they possibly could.
In the end we discovered Hubba Bubba was the best!

The second experiment: What would happen when you mix water and cornstarch together?
~ The general hypothesis was that students thought an explosion was about to occur.
~ However: here is what actually happened:

February

This past week we started our new science unit: Building with a Variety of Materials.
Our first project involved creating an animal out of clay that could stay standing without the use of a base. After everyone had an opportunity to build their animal, they then had to share the process with the rest of the class and discuss any modifications made in order to be successful with having their animal stand. Here are our animals:
