Mrs. Baker and two students performing a quick skit outlining the importance of "unplugging" and reading together as a family.

Ms. Hewko and Mrs. Robertson performing a skit demonstrating how students can sit and discuss the book!

Mrs. Nelson and Mr. Kirkwin performing a scene from Crenshaw.

Science Fun!!

We are currently working on our science unit: Building with a Variety of Materials. We have turned the unit into a more Project Based Learning approach. There are pictures posted on our Science tab of the clay animals and pieces of furniture we made. However we are now moving into more challenging tasks. Building projects can often lead to frustration as things do not always work out the way we want them to. In order to work on being patient, working through frustration and making modifications, we made card houses!!

Now, let the super fun and exciting projects begin!!! This week we are working on making water bottle holders. The requirements for this project:
1. The holder must be wide enough to hold the water bottle.
2. The holder must be able to hold a completely full water bottle.
3. The holder must hang from the desk, it cannot sit on the desk.
4. The holder must be able to move to a different location on the desk with ease (in case we move seating arrangements, which happens quite frequently in 3B).

Here is our progress so far:

Hana's Suitcase

For the last 3 weeks, we've been reading the story: Hana's Suitcase by Karen Levine.

It has been such an amazing experience teaching the students of 3B about some major parts of our world's history, such as World War 2 and the Holocaust. Students had so many questions and were curious as to how such an event could even occur. This story brought out so many incredible conversations about historical and current day events. The final paragraph sums up the lessons Hana, Fumiko and George have taught students. Those are the lessons of: Tolerance, Respect and Compassion.

One School, One Book

On Thursday, we will be launching our One School, One Book project! If you'd like to learn more about the foundation of One School One Book you are welcome to check out this link: Readtothem.org

For the last week and a half, we've had a count down to our launch where clues have been left around the school that may help students discover what book we have chosen. The process of choosing the PERFECT book is quite difficult. Our committee has worked since May of last year trying to decide on a title that would be appropriate for students from kindergarten to grade 5. I am so excited with this book, I hope you will be too!!

The purpose of this project is to get students and families reading together at home. Each family will receive a copy of our chosen book, that is yours to keep!! Along with the book you will receive a reading schedule of chapters to read each night as a family. Throughout the three week project, we will spend time each day discussing the chapters from the night before.

Our launch will take place on Thursday from 2:15-3. Look for more information about the book and school wide initiatives after our launch!

Science Building Challenge!!

Even Nathan's robot joined in on the fun!

Spirit Assembly, January 19

We had a PJ Day Spirit Assembly today. Students were asked to wear their lovely, cozy PJ's to school! During our spirit assembly, we had 3 students receive Ethical Citizen Awards.

An Ethical Citizen is:
Doing the right thing even when non one is looking. Criteria:
  • Take responsibility for my actions
  • Respect the learning of others
  • Be a role model
  • Take care of belongings & school property
  • Be courteous
  • Work & play safely
  • Use respectful language

Congratulations Lexi, Kaiden and Justin for demonstrating what it means to be an Ethical Citizen!

During our assembly, we had the absolute pleasure to watch Hibikiya Drummers. Enjoy the video below of their amazing performance.

If you'd like more information you can check them out Here!!

To end our assembly we always sing our Mike Mountain Horse song. While singing, I captured a sweet moment of students showing appreciation for one another!

Word Work Games

We play many different games in Grade 3 to work on various spelling words and high frequency words. A simple, yet fun game is Spelling Battleship!! If you would like a copy of the template to play at home with your child, just write me a note in your child's agenda.
